The Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector or PTLLS award covers the fundamentals of teaching in  progressing and adult education – The course includes how to plan your sessions,  how to motivate your learners and the use  of a number of assessment techniques. It's the initial step  on the way to becoming an official practitioner  - In other words a complete  licence to teach in the lifelong learning sector.

Who is a PTLLS qualification for?

The PTLLS qualification is for new comers to the Lifelong Learning Sector – This means you don’t have to have any previous teaching qualifications or experience.  The qualification is also ideal for people who already work in the industry but want to obtain an official qualification. Before you sign up for a PTLLS course it is a good idea to know what subject you would like to teach, so you can work towards the award in that area.

  • In addition, you will have to complete 30 minutes of teaching practice. Keeping a portfolio of your Teaching Practice plus a Reflective Learning account Journal is encouraged.

What is the right level for me?

  • Level 3
    this is for newcomers to the Lifelong Learning Sector or those who have little experience and want a concrete introduction to the basic practical of teaching skills and theory.
  • Level 4
    this is for newcomers to the Lifelong Learning Sector or those who have some experience but with no formal qualification.

How long does the course take?
The guided learning hours for this qualification are:

  • Level 3 = 30 hours
  • Level 4 = 30 hours.

What jobs can a PTLLS award lead to?
After you have obtained the qualification, you can begin as an educator in the lifelong learning sector.
The Possible jobs you can do include: 

  • teaching assistant
  • learning support assistant
  • training manager.
  • training instructor

After completing the qualification, you can move onto other awards that will help you to become a qualified teacher or associate teacher.

    • If you wish to become an associate teacher you will need a Certificate in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector
    • If you wish to become a full teacher you will need a Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector
